Bald Barbie Facebook Page Helping Girls with Hair Loss

Bald Barbie for Alopecia awareness

A group of women have made a page on Facebook asking the Barbie doll manufacturers to design a bald Barbie. The goal of this request is to help young children who suffer from hair loss and baldness due to chemotherapy or such medical conditions as Alopecia (an auto-immune disease that primarily affects the hair on your scalp). Their hope is to raise awareness of hair loss related conditions in young children.

The page was put up before Christmas with a name of ‘Beautiful and Bald Barbie!’ So far, the page has received 18,000 likes. The creators of the page say that baldness, whatever the cause, has become an issue that needs a prompt solution. Becoming bald from Alopecia or cancer treatment is something that can’t be controlled by the girls and women. Those who have to face baldness at such a young age, should also not feel insulted, it is not their fault. Although, little girls becoming bald does sounds extraordinary, as one is not used to see them that way, it is an increasingly common occurence.

One of the women who was actively involved to make the page has affirmed that she got involved in this process as she has saw first hand the public response to own daughter who lost her hair. Her daughter is battling with leukemia and during her chemotherapy process she had to remain bald for seven months.

During the treatment period, they found that whenever they visited a market, people used to stare at her ask why her daughter was bald at such a young age? It was very confronting and disheartening. This is the reason that she is promoting to have a bald Barbie.

“We think [a bald Barbie] would be therapeutic and I think it would help baldness become more quote unquote normal. It would be seen. It wouldn’t be this odd thing that people don’t have hair’, said she.
