Women’s Hair loss: Post partum hair loss (hair loss after pregnancy) affects all women, even celebrities, and should not be a cause of concern. Typically we can expect to lose 100 – 150 hairs per day. During pregnancy this changes, often a woman will not lose any hair at all. This is due to the hormonal changes in the body and keep the hairs in the anagen (or growing) phase during the gestation period. After delivery of the child, the body undergoes another massive change hormonally and all of the hairs that should have fallen out during the gestation period will move the the catagen phase (resting phase) and then the telogen phase (falling out stage). This final phase typically starts 90 days after delivery of the child.
The good news is that this hair loss is usually temporary and your hair will begin to grow again. However, this is not always the case. We are seeing more and more women coming into our practice who have noticed a significant drop in the amount of hair they have after having children (see our video “Meet Nikki”). If this is the case there are a number of hair replacement options that are available to overcome women’s hair loss.
