Five Common Hair Loss Myths

Myths about hair loss have been around for generations and there are a variety of reasons why these old wives tales are still with us today. Whether it’s that they appear to be true to the eye or are true only in extreme circumstances, below we will discover the follicular truth.

1. Wearing a hat can cause hair loss.

There are two situations in which this could be true, both of which are caused by the person wearing the hat rather than the hat itself. If you are wearing a hat so tight that it restricts blood flow to the hair follicles then the possibility of hair loss may increase. Secondly, wearing a hat for an extended period of time in hot, humid weather could lead to sebum plugs. Heat and humidity bring sebum, the skin’s built-in lubricant, to the surface. If the sebum has time to react with cholesterol it forms a plug that could suffocate hair follicles leading to potential hair loss. However, the chance of either of these causing significant hair loss is very slim.

2. Cutting hair makes it grow thicker.

Each strand of hair is thicker at the scalp than at its tip. When you get a haircut, it may appear that your hair has thickened simply because the split ends have been cut off. It is a pleasant optical illusion. If you find your hair is thinning at the scalp or just generally thinning, there are two great options to your hair an instant boost. If you’re a woman our beautiful crown extensions and if you’re a man, our innovative sensigraft, can immediately create thickness and stunning hair in your areas of concern.

3. Daily washing and blow drying can trigger hair loss.

This is simply not true; however, frequent exposure to intense heat does damage hair. Heat damaged hair is usually brittle and strands easily break off. It may look as if you are shedding hair. Excessive heat can damage hair follicles as well, possibly causing hair loss. Very aggressive hair pulling, tight ponytails or braids used over extended periods of time can cause traction alopecia.

4. It is possible to increase the amount of hair I have.

The number of follicles you were born with is the number you’re stuck with. Drugs, herbs, vitamins, or good nutrition may make your hair look healthier but the number of strands will remain the same. While this may be the case, if you are looking to increase the thickness of your hair, BioTHIK hair fibres will instantly transform your thin hair into thicker, fuller hair in seconds.

5. You have your mother’s side of the family to thank for your hair loss.

If you are genetically wired for hair loss, it can be inherited from either side of the family. You came into the world with two copies of genetic information that determined your predisposition to hair loss; one copy from each parent. If one of those copies is labelled “hair loss’ and the other is labelled “hair for life,’ the hair loss gene will win out because hair loss is the dominant trait. Like most things concerning family, it gets complicated.
